About the role Bethel University is seeking an Events Audio Technician to be the creative force behind the sound of our campus. From the spiritual energy of weekly Chapel and Vespers to the technical precision of Music and Drama productions, you will be the primary audio technical campus partner ensuring our mission is heard. This isn't just a "behind-the-scenes" job; it’s a role where you’ll manage AVL networks, troubleshoot complex systems, and mentor a dedicated team of student technicians. The Role at a Glance: 70% Production: Lead audio engineering for campus ministries and major performing arts events. 20% Systems: Manage and maintain our digital audio, lighting, and AVL networks. 10% Mentorship: Train and oversee student staff to deliver excellence. Candidates must maintain a flexible schedule that includes a mix of traditional Monday–Friday hours, evenings, and weekends. Total availability for key campus events is a core requirement of the position to ensure seamless execution and support. If you thrive in a dynamic environment where no two weeks look the same, you’ll fit right in. What you'll do Primary responsibilities 1. Live Production and Audio Engineering – 70% Campus Ministries: Serve as the primary audio engineer for weekly Chapel and Vespers services and other campus events, collaborating with ministry leaders to ensure high-quality spiritual environments. Arts & Drama: Lead audio production for major Music & Drama departmental events, including the Festival of Christmas, Operas, and Musicals; serve as the primary liaison for external professional recording companies. Campus Events & Rentals: Coordinate with the Conference and Events Services team to provide comprehensive audio and technical support for internal events and external facility rentals. 2. Systems Management- 20% System Maintenance: Perform regular evaluations and maintenance of all sound systems within assigned areas; Identify and recommend necessary repairs or upgrades. Network Administration: Manage and optimize technical networks supporting Audio, Lighting, and Video systems to ensure seamless connectivity and performance. 3. Student Staff Oversight - 10% Scheduling: Collaborate with the manager to review and finalize weekly student schedules, ensuring adequate technical coverage for all campus events. Mentorship: Conduct hands-on training for student workers, equipping them with the technical skills necessary to support university productions. Qualifications Education, Licensure & Experience Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required. An associate’s degree in Live Production, Audio Engineering, or a related field is preferred. Certifications: Relevant technical certifications (e.g., Dante, CTS, or manufacturer-specific training) are a plus. Experience: 2+ years of experience in live audio, video, lighting (AVL), and technical networking. Technical Proficiency: Demonstrated ability to operate, troubleshoot, and maintain integrated AVL and network systems. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Audio & Production Excellence Live Sound: Proficient in both analog and digital audio mixing for varied environments (worship, theater, and conferences). System Configuration: Ability to program and configure digital audio systems and Dante-based networks. Media Capture: Skilled in audio recording software for capturing and post-production media distribution. Lighting & Visual Technology Lighting Control: Competent in patching and protocols, including DMX, RDM, and IP. Visual Integration: Working knowledge of LED pixel mapping, basic videography, and presentation software such as ProPresenter and Keynote. Advanced Technical Knowledge Systems Programming: Experience with or exposure to Extron, HiQnet Audio Architect, or Python is highly desirable. Networking: Ability to configure and manage AV-specific networks. Professional Core Competencies Adaptability: A "quick learner" who can stay current with evolving production technologies. Communication: Professional written and verbal communication skills for collaborating with internal team, campus partners, and external vendors. Physical Abilities The person in this role will be required to climb ladders, spiral staircases, catwalk areas, and stationary clouds at very high heights. Ability to rig equipment above audience seating areas. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to load, set up, strike, and unload event equipment. The following movements may also be required throughout the shift: bending, squatting, stooping, kneeling, climbing stairs, pushing/pulling up to 75 pounds, reaching above shoulder level, waist twisting, carrying/lifting up to 50 pounds, gripping/grasping, and repetitive hand and arm movements. The employee may be required to access areas that are not ADA-compliant. Interviews for this role will begin in July 2026. Position Summary The Lead Sound Engineer is responsible for executing and replicating the sound design for productions. This role serves as the lead console programmer and operator for Guthrie Theater productions, ensuring consistent, high-quality sound reinforcement while upholding the intent of the Sound Designer. The Lead Sound Engineer is also responsible for the maintenance of all sound equipment, ensuring systems are properly maintained and performance ready. In addition to performance work, this role participates in production preparation, load-in, technical rehearsals, changeovers, and strike for assigned productions. Schedule:This role follows the dynamic schedule of a working theater. Hours vary based on type of work. Evening and weekend hours are typical.
